The questions that come before the first stake
The help area inside the app goes into more detail. Here is what people want to know before putting real money on the line.
Is real money actually moving?
Yes. If you miss a due date, the stake is charged to the card you set up — automatically, once a day around midday. At midday rather than at night so that overnight measurements (sleep, steps) can still arrive; otherwise a day you actually completed would be charged as missed. A day can never be charged twice.
How much of my stake reaches the organisation?
80%. Tensio keeps the remaining 20% — it pays for payment fees, server operations and forwarding to the organisation. The split is shown to you before every goal and recorded on every receipt. What has been forwarded in total is public on the transparency page.
What’s the difference between donation and anti-charity?
Not whether the beneficiary is “good” — but your relationship to them. With “donation” the money goes to someone you support; the loss is softened. With “anti-charity” it goes to someone whose success hurts you — for example your sports rival. That demonstrably motivates more strongly.
Club foundations do good too — how can that be anti-charity?
That is exactly the point: it is not about the money being wasted, but about who you strengthen. As a Dortmund fan, donating to Schalke’s foundation hurts — not because the foundation is bad, but because your money helped Schalke.
What happens if I’m ill or on holiday?
That’s what the pause joker is for: it pauses a due day. We don’t ask for the reason and require no proof. Three are free each month, saveable up to nine. A joker holds your streak but doesn’t extend it — and it never works retroactively, only for today or the future.
Does the app remind me about open check-ins?
Yes, in several ways: an evening reminder with a last call at 22:45, plus a learning variant that speaks up per goal once your usual check-in time has passed. If you want, Tensio even verifies health goals in the evening itself and checks in what you’ve achieved. Sundays at 20:30 the weekly review arrives. All of it can be switched off individually — and on your home screen the “Tensio – Today” widget shows what is on the line at any moment.
What will Tensio send me — and what can I turn off?
Three separate channels, and none of them is advertising you didn’t ask for:
Reminders are created on your device and can be switched off individually — the evening reminder, the last warning at 22:45, the learning per-goal variant and the Sunday weekly recap.
Push messages only cover what you cannot see yourself: a stake was charged, a payment failed, your streak is at risk, someone nudged or cheered you, someone used the team joker. That is the complete list — anything not on it cannot be sent. No tips, no “we miss you” message.
Emails about your account (a charge notice, say) are part of the contract. Anything beyond that — tips and news — only reaches you after you click a confirmation link in a first email, and one click unsubscribes you again.
What happens to my goals when I switch phones?
They come back. Your goals and your complete check-in history live on the server and are loaded when you sign in on the new device — automatically, for every account.
The verification details — the target value, the apps being counted, the coordinates, an alarm time — additionally live in an encrypted package whose key is derived from your password. We cannot read it. That’s why it is missing in two cases: when you sign in with Google (there is no password to derive a key from) and after a password reset. The affected goals are then briefly locked and the app asks once for the target value.
So the worst outcome is “confirm three target values”, never “your goals are gone”. You cannot change the verification path while doing so — otherwise a running goal could quietly be lowered when filling the details back in.
Why can’t I just type in my own goal?
Because Tensio couldn’t verify it. “No sugar” could simply be claimed — and a stake you escape by making a claim is not a stake. That is why the catalog only contains goals with a real verification source. Freely worded goals still exist: as explicitly marked honour-based goals with Tensio Plus.
Can’t I just cheat on honour-based goals?
Yes. Nobody stops you from confirming the check-in without having reached the goal — then your stake isn’t forfeited. We say this openly instead of faking a verification that doesn’t exist. Anyone who lies to themselves gets nothing out of the tool anyway.
What data does Tensio collect?
Health values, location and app usage times are evaluated on the device and immediately discarded. Only this is stored: “day done — yes or no”. No step counts, no coordinates, no movement profiles. Card data lives with Stripe, never with us. Everything else is in the privacy policy.
Do I really need a card?
For a goal with a stake, yes — without a card there would be no charge and therefore no bite. Nothing is charged when you save it, only if you really miss a check-in.
Do I get a donation receipt?
A statement yes, a tax certificate no. Under “Donations” you can generate a PDF for each year: every amount collected, broken down by organisation — as plain as a bank statement. It is not tax-deductible: only the organisation itself may issue a tax certificate, and your stake goes to Tensio first, not to them.
Why only five goals at a time?
Five active goals are possible for free; archived ones don’t count. With Tensio Plus there’s no limit.
Is there a version for iPhone?
Not at the moment. Tensio is being built for Android first — the verification sources everything rests on (Health Connect, usage data) work differently on iOS. Better one platform where verification really holds than two where it half works.
How do I cancel Tensio Plus?
In the Play Store under “Subscriptions”. The subscription renews monthly and can be cancelled at any time; it stays usable until the end of the month you paid for.
How do I delete my account?
In the app under “Profile” — or via this page, even without the app installed.
Anything else?
The help area in the app answers considerably more questions than this page — and you’ll find support contact details there too.
